Well to be brutally honest the main advantage to downloading films and music, is because its 'Free'. Another advantage is of course the fact that you do not have to go to the shops to buy it, a few clicks and secs/mins/hours later you will have what you wanted.

For me the downloading sevice did forfill its purpose, which is to download music and films from other users of the service to the extent that thousands, if not millions use it on a frequent basis.

Problems that you gte from downloading things online include:

*If it is illegal you have the law to face
*There is a large chance of getting viruses from some services
*The ones in which you pay, such as iTunes, for a little bit extra you have the copying writes taken away, which means you can copy these files and send them to other people. The main disadvantage to this use is the fact that deep within the files is your personal detail, which means if you are part of a sharing service, your file could be taken by thousands of users. This means apple have the write to 'sort you out'.
*Another downside is the thing you are looking for may not be in the internet yet
*If you don't have the internet-your not going to get very far.
